Baking Up Good Behavior

So the upcoming holiday and winter break has well children and grown ups excited.  But being a kindergarten teacher it is important to modify things on a almost daily basis to keep things fresh and exciting.  I saw something similar to this activity on a website another kindergarten teacher had using Christmas trees.  Well my school that is not a PC thing to do.  So I modified the activity and used our focus on gingerbread man to encourage good behavior.
So on in order to build your gingerbread man----you have to be on a "good" color at the end of the day! Thus encouraging good choices and listening....A skill that even in Dec is still a challenge.  It also encourages children to come to school because if you don't come to school you cant have good behavior to get something on your gingerbread man.  It has worked so far---they really want to have things on their gingerbread man!

So on Day 1--they earned their gingerbread body
Day 2-eyes
Day 3-nose
Day 4- 1 button
Day 5-mouth

We will continue to add to our gingerbread man until Winter break and then they can take home their gingerbread man!!! At the end of every week students will have some kind of reward.

How to not spend your Saturday packing!

So we are about 10 days from moving and so logically you would think---pack up the house....well no that would not be the case...on this particular Saturday- my roommate and I got up and decided we needed to run some errands. First stop---Krispe Kreme (we had a coupon) and proceeded to purchase 2 dozen donuts---1 hot now and then the holiday assortment and 2 hot chocolates.  Together we ate about 4 donuts and drove to Joanne's.  Inside Joanne's we found random stuff---including tins that my coworkers may see in the coming weeks as holiday gifts, remnants of polar fleece, and over sized buttons.  We went in for pinking sheers and a rotary cutter (we actually did purchase these with a 50% coupon)!

Now that we had fun---we had to go match paint to fix the holes that are currently in the rental.....first stop---Lowe's----no we actually purchase paint here we did however find holiday decorations for the bathroom (that I am sure I will get yelled at when my husband comes home from work) oh well! Finally in the paint section---was told by the associate that originally paint was purchased at Home Depot (note: always read labels on paint cans). While purchasing the holiday decorations--realize that remnants of the hot cocoa is at the bottom of my Coach purse...not sure how it got there knowing I drank all of the hot cocoa.

Gripe to roommate while in the car ride to Home Depot to match paint.....knowing full well that if it would have been any other purse....this wouldn't have happened.

While at Home Depot-we actually find the paint we needed and realized the paint inside did not match the labels on the lids....the salesclerk was very helpful in the purchase of 3 gallons and 1 quart of various colors of paint.  Hopefully they will match.....if not....well yeah....

Place cans of paint in the already full car trunk and proceed to NEX/Commissary.   This is an important step...At the NEX we purchased 4 white naked coffee mugs....at the commissary on pay day weekend purchase 18 lbs of white rice using coupons that you would never use normally. Also purchase food to feed yourself for the week.... Proceed home...unload car and then begin crafting......

Directions for Mug Cozies
Step 1: Square off fabric....5 in wide by 22 in long (realize that the people who work in cutting don't know how to do their job!)
Step 2--cut 1 inch strips-do not cut all the way to the end....
Step 3: Using the 5 pieces braid into braid...while dog is barking because you aren't paying attention to her..

Step 4: Pin off bottom of the braid so that when you go to stitch the top it will not come apart....

Step 5: Cut off extra on the top where you sewed to keep the top from coming undone....and then measure around the cup marking where you need to cut the excess off after you sewed.....this is not an exact science....but don't make it to short....or the button won't work.....
Step 6: Sew button on one end of the braid....
eat one red velvet donut while your roommate sews on the button.....
Step 7: slide the button around the cup and join in the braid.

Congratulations----your mug is no longer naked :)

Using the remnants of the polar fleece we also decided that rice packs are a good useful invention.......realized you have made to many and between you and your roommate you don't know exactly who all these are for and you may not have enough friends that you need to give them too.....

How to make these: make squares of polar fleece----sew three sides---turn inside out----fill with rice---sew final side----put in microwave for about 30 sec depending on size---put on back of neck!

Realize that you have been talking to yourself and your roommate is laughing at you and falling out of her chair while you have been talking and she's been doing all the work...Note to self----I did an awesome job filling rice packs...

Realize the dog barking if because it past dinner time and she's hungry....Objective---don't pack boxes completed time for a Christmas movie and a drink!

Alright so below is the homework of one of my children... This week we are obviously leading up to thanksgiving and the history behind it.  So in response to the question: Who did the Native American's help???

Smart Smiles in School

Today at school our K-2 students got exposed to dental health education in a fun and fascinating way. Delta Dental of Virginia developed Smart Smiles© In School to teach students in K-5 how to form good oral health habits and along with Radio Disney provided a fun way for the students to interact with their dental health knowledge.
So for all those teachers out there.....if you can get your school to bring this program in.  It is totally worth the time and the few extra lessons (that they give you) to teach as part of the program!

Cake decorating

My birthday cake last summer

Cake for Cait's Baby shower

Red Ribbon Week

So for Red Ribbon week...my students made owls out of paper plates and made their own pumpkins....The kids loved the activity and even with the same materials they all came out alittle differently....
